After we reached Finnish mainland, and were under the clouds, we already could see what us expected the next days - each quantity snow. After the landing in Helsinki, we took the Finnair-Bus to the railway station. The streets were dark and wet, the snow was accumulated to pyramids.
How already described of knowing persons, we found the way of the airport to the hotel also easy; out of the bus to the Rautatieasema (that is the Finish word to Centralstation), and past the head postoffice, to the right uphill to the hotel. The thick ice, that lay partially yet on the sidewalks, was interfused with crushed rock.
For a visit, we had sat down on the plan Suomenlinna. With maps, which we found in the hotel, gone for sightseeing.
I imagined the inner cities somewhat more largely. The harbor was reached fast, but it was a long way to the pier of our ferry. So we saw a remarkable scaffolding which was constructed just at the harbor.
For me, that was already an nightmare to look on it. It should be a couple of days later a ski jump.
The thick ice layer in the harbor basin let doubt arise at the beginning of trip to the island, the small ferry had to fight correspondingly. The "Sveaborg", that is called by the Finn "Viapori", was built middle of the 18ten century of the Sweden with large expense as a strategic base in the Baltic See. Today it is main an excursion destination and base of the Finnish Navy.
Through the strong cold of the past weeks froze the condensate of that only 3°C cold air at the cold walls. For the eye a beautiful matter.
Temppeliaukio Kirkko is a church without tower, built 1969 of Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen in a granite rock, itis a hall to the internal contemplation and quiet. On the walls in the rock, a bright cupola roof reposes out of wood and concrete. The room renounces each mammon. Worthseeing, like the inner city of Helsinki also.
The Sibelius monument is in a quite small park in the vicinity of the olympic area. Of the streetcar 3T, it is to be reached with 10 minutes footpath easily.
Here is much snow and ice also, all around the monument. We had effort to go uprightly - we does what is possible.
On the way back we passes by at the tram mueseum.
We did not visit the olympic area, but we brought along a picture.
For much more sightseeing remained us some time, we wanted to make shopping also . In spite of the higher prices in Finland, I abundantly used that. Here are better German-Finnish dictionaries as in Germany.
