On this day I had to rise out of my bad already early, because quarter before eleven I startet with the Finnair to Helsinki. At 14:00 I am arrive in the Finnish capital and dawdling away time up to the far flight to Kittilä. The flight lasted not completely 1 1/2 hours, so that we arrived Kittilä around 6:00 pm in the darkness Info about Kittilä Airport
However the course to the terminal building show us already " its really cold outsite here", with each breath froze the nose hair together. At our contact man, our bus driver for the next days, collected ever more people to wait for further guests from Switzerland.
After long waiting we betook to the bus to drive finally to Äkäskero Wildernes Lodge
A jollier man our bus drivers, still told us that the heating in the bus are slightly broken. The thermometer showed -27°C outside. Thus we drove over 40 km in a cold bus. The driver drove as if this travel a part of the Lapplandrally lasts
After I moved into my room went , like all others also, to the first common meal. Afterwards we were divided in five groups. In my group were Kathleen, Dany, Annette, Cindy and Erwin. Ralph, our Guide, we should see not before the next day.
For the conclusion of the evening we received our equipment from Antje for the next days. Somehow, my clothes seemed me 3 km too large, it had its authority.
Clothes which to carry forward wants clothed at the boddy.
The second day Breakfast around eight, departure to the dogcamp around nine. Ralph led us to the kennels in those already the sledges stood. It described us like the dogs to harnessing, which is to be considered at the sledge and its use and which associated daily tasks. Until start we had to catch and harness the dogs. Before each sledge four dogs, Ralph ran with six dogs.
Ralph drove first thorou the wodden gate, and I would gave my first "ok" to the dogs, as the dogs began to biting against each other. I had teffort to release cables Tugline trouble it apart - all waited only for me.
When driving through the gate the carriage was pulled hard against the post. The thermometer in the Overal showed -15°C. To cold weather I had still get accustomed. The trees were highly covered with snow. Everything ran well, only Wjuhus paws made me concerns. It had long hair between the toes, so that always ice rind formed. I had to continue four times around the paws to clean. With last stop she got two "Booties" because of an injury on here backpaws.
Up to the long mountain everything ran completely well, but the upward gradient tired us. At the end of the travel all groups met in the Kota where we got hot soup. To the conclusion of the routes, somewhere tell it, it is coming to fights between the groups around the last soup - musher stories???
The third day We was fetched as on the second day.
We would have to leave the comfort of the hotel some days. Everyone received for the hut route a new dog team. Because of the luggage and the supplies Ralph eight dog had, all other five dogs in the team. The sequence of the dogs should not change in the course of the route. My Leaddogsare Xylitol and Pältsä, as my Swingdog run Hossa and as Wheeldogs runJanna and Jennis. As usual, when the dogs on the "Gangline" waiting, upraising craving bow-wow until released "OK" As Rookies we knew only the commands "OK" and "Halt" (The dog understood German language !!)
At this time I was spared of biting and had a good start.
Ralph led us across one most beautiful distances those the Camp on the Wildernesstour to offer has. The pictures speak their own language. At the end of the day, Ralph described us like the "Gangline" is extended, and built from this an overnight accomodation system for our dogs.
The hut on this day was nice and small, had no light and no water. Against the darkness there were candles. We got the water from the swamp. There there was a frozen fountain which we opened with an axe, in order to get with a scoop the water.
The first action in a new hut was that the furnace to be put on. Also in the Sauna. The frozen Dogfood had to be dewed for the further processing. At the late evening I accompanied Ralph on its nocturnal inspection to the dogs. Each paw of the small workers was controlled and supplied. He makes it each evening and in all weather conditions.
The furnace in the hut was two times filled up at this night, so that we had snugy 15°C on the next morning.
The fourth day
After the breakfast somewhere chopped the firewood and filled up for next group at evening. Cleaning up hut and sauna "propper clean" all clouthes pack again into the sledges, and to harness the dogs. The snap hooks cannot be served with thick gloves and have with the hands to be partly thawed out.
At this night we had up to -39°C. The dogs couches again in their indentation, which them melted over night into the snow, and are fastened successively to the "Gangline"
The bow-wow of a single dog infected fast and ends, like so often, in excited going howling befor starting.
The travel led us by the same landscape as on the day before, also the weather was very good. The sun gave temperatures to us around -30°C. The dogs made their thing good and began themselves to accustom together. Toward end of the day we crossed a road, drove on a large lake and reached after its end on a large clearing our current hut. The plant was extensively doublehad hut for two groups and a fuelengine water pump. The pure luxury.
The squirting water put an ice armor around my legs. Inside the hut there was two areas and a large kitchen. Under the windows were heating elements. Central heating? There was a central heating, a much to small wood furnace stood in that larger sleep area. Erwin strove immediately to give life to the furnace. After one hour we had 5°C inside the hut. Ralph prepared the dinner during its wrapped in steam. It did not want to become warm in the kitchen. The "reindeermeatcutintostipes" (long word) with cranberrytoping was for me the highlight of the evening.
The only warm place was the Sauna or the sleeping bag.
The fifth day If do not stuck the head outside the sleeping bag was bearable in this night on the upper floors of the beds.
However, only half of our supertroop had this advantage. The furnace was cold for a long time, and a view of the thermometer outside did no better mood arise.
The dogs were also not ready to be moved voluntarily from their roosts.
The only one which keeps upright today is "bake on track".
My digital camera leaves me in the pass, I could to throw up.
After few kilometers we pass again a road. Again a long times procedure, Erwin must walk again from the back end to the road.
That the streetcrossing is nearby our own sledgedogcamp realised I to late. My dogs broke out sidewards to the entry to the Camp. They tore even the two snow anchors also.
On that travel none of the dogs had the correct course. My dogs let be motivated after some time and we arrived good at our last hut. The remainder ran off nearly automatically
The sixth day Ralph came in this morning, said anything of -12°C and snow and put on the Gaslight at the ceiling. Ralph put my small ones in the last evening into the hut.
After loading the sledges installs the dogs still to them and went through the new-fallen snow. The falling snow obstructed the view. It ran in parts quite fast downhill, it was good. In the place where us the skidoos meets were went a jerk through the carriage and the small dogs gave once again correctly speed. "The next curve around the tree goes or does not go" I thought, and could the sledge be run. After short time I was apparently alone on trail. Ralph said he lasts behind reindeers been, why all dogs were so fast.
Relatively fast we were back in the Camp, unloaded the sledges and let the dogs in the kennel run. Short time after 6:00 pm clock we met in the lobby of the hotel. The equipment was given back and all groups met with their Guides to the conclusion meal. We arranged a snow shoe route for the next day to seven km removed dogcamp, to at alast time Ralph and "our dogs"
The sieved day For this day I had my mind in a travel with an skidoo, however in the course of the journey already rejected. The tour to the Camp was me rather. There in the hotel bets whether we are to be searched in the forests. But against a conspiring team cannot to bets, surely we found the way across the wilderness. It snowed a little, it was with -6°C too much warm.
Our busdriver pickt up us and drive like the devil himself back to the hotel.
The eighth day was designated only for departure. The heating at the bus are working - only show?? Departure from Kittilä was very hard for me, under the plan fading Lapland, for one week my new habitat. While serval hours stop at Helsinki i got shopping
Back home
