Fortress of Louisbourg, Cape Brenton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada
First etablished as a community by the French in 1713, this famous Fortress defended French possessions and fishing interests in North Amerika. Captured by the British in 1745, the fortress was returned to the French in 1748, only to be recaptured by the British in 1758. Two years later, the British systematically demolished its fortifications to prevent its return to the French.
